Austin started as a riverside village in a buffalo-hunting area. Scouts in 1839 designated Austin as the capital of the Republic of Texas. It got its name from Stephen F. Austin who was one of the fathers of the republic. Austin was threatened by the Mexican invasion and the government only returned in 1845 when Texas also became a part of the United States.
