Top Rated Alcohol Detox Program For Residents of Houston

Alcohol is one of the most dangerous substances on the planet, yet because it is so socially accepted, not many people realize this. Frequent heavy use quickly causes dependency and high levels of tolerance which makes quitting difficult and dangerous. Addictive disorders can cause problems with work, friends, family, and physical and mental health issues. Recent studies have shown that over 14.5 million people struggle with alcoholism or alcohol use dependency. And, alcohol-related deaths are the third highest form of preventable deaths in the US, behind obesity and smoking.

Alcohol addiction is a treatable mental disease. Many people use alcohol and other substances to self-medicate and treat undiagnosed traumas and mental issues called co-occurring disorders. At Resurgence Behavioral Health, we treat more than just addiction. We take a holistic approach to your recovery. We are the top-rated alcohol detox program for that reason. We offer a medical detox program to reduce your symptoms using medications distributed and monitored by our licensed professionals. Recurrent, heavy alcohol use can cause severe withdrawal symptoms. During our medical detox, we oversee those to ensure a safe and effective detox. And after that, we offer many different inpatient and outpatient treatment programs to ensure the probability of long-term recovery. We follow that with sober living and aftercare support.

What is Alcohol Detox Like?

To understand what alcohol rehab is like, it is essential to understand what alcohol does to the body. Alcohol abuse changes the body. The more it is used, the higher tolerance is built, so more alcohol is needed to produce the same effect. Sudden stoppage then leads to withdrawal due to the fact that the body now relies on alcohol to function. Not only are the withdrawal symptoms hard to tolerate, but they can also be extremely dangerous.

Alcohol stimulates the body’s GABA receptors which are what produce that relaxed feeling when you drink. When alcohol is no longer introduced, glutamate overcompensates and produces the opposite effect – anxiety and other such symptoms. Mild symptoms of withdrawal include headache, shakiness, insomnia, anxiety, sweating, and nausea. More severe symptoms are seizures, hallucinations, fever, confusion, delusions, and can be life-threatening. We administer medications to help alleviate these symptoms through our medical detox program while we closely monitor you, ready to handle any complications that may arise. Our goal is that no one shall suffer.

How Long is Alcohol Detox?

How long detox lasts is wholly personal and depends on how long you abused alcohol and how often – your level of alcohol dependency. On average, most detox symptoms will pass after five days. The first symptoms will begin to appear 6-12 hours after your last drink. These include stomach pain, headache, insomnia, and nausea. At 12-48 hours, more severe symptoms will begin to appear, and those can be seizures and hallucinations. The most severe symptoms may arise around days 2-3, and these are called delirium tremens or the DTs. The DTs require medical assistance and are extremely serious.

The worst and most severe form of withdrawal is the DTs. They involve a rapid onset of confusion, altered mental status (global confusion), and sympathetic overdrive (autonomic hyperactivity), which can progress to cardiovascular collapse. Agitation, visual and auditory hallucinations, and fever may also occur. Therefore, it is imperative to be medically supervised during alcohol detox and why it is deemed to be so dangerous.
